For their 10th anniversary, they dreamed up something truly extraordinary—a session that intertwined their love story with Brittaney’s stunning shadow puppet artistry.
Using projectors, they brought her creations to life in a dance of darks and lights, revealing intricate silhouettes that were as moving as they were beautiful. Some of the puppets even dated back to their wedding day—a tender nod to where their story began. Photographing the contrast of shadows and projections was a creative challenge I couldn’t wait to take on, and the result was nothing short of magic.
And, as if the day couldn’t get any more special, Chad and Brittaney surprised me with the most joyful twist—a pregnancy announcement woven into the session!
It was such a joy capturing these layered, emotional moments for them. Their session was a perfect reminder of how incorporating what you love into your photos can turn them into something deeply personal and unforgettable.
Here are 5 tips for couples planning their own session and looking to make it uniquely theirs:
1. Make It Personal
Your photos should reflect you. Whether it’s cooking breakfast together, dancing in your living room, or in Chad and Brittaney’s case, bringing an art form to life—incorporating activities or passions you share adds meaning and depth to your session.
Pro Tip: Think about what feels natural to your relationship. What do you love doing together? How can that translate visually? Your photographer can help you brainstorm ways to turn those everyday moments into something extraordinary. GET IN TOUCH HERE if you want to explore your own anniversary session.
2. Trust Your Photographer
A great photographer isn’t just taking pictures—they’re directing, guiding, and helping you feel comfortable in front of the camera. I describe myself as more of a director than a poser. I use prompts and movements to create authentic interactions.
Pro Tip: Choose someone who knows how to bring out your personality and will collaborate with you on creative ideas that make your photos feel alive.
3. Let the Light Inspire You
Light sets the tone for your photos, and embracing it—whether it’s natural sunlight, golden hour glow, or dramatic shadows—can elevate your images. For this session, the projections and shadow play created bold contrasts that gave each photo a cinematic feel. I worked carefully to balance those deep darks with the bright highlights, showcasing the artistry while keeping the focus on their connection.
Pro Tip: Ask your photographer about lighting ideas that complement your vision. Sometimes the most unique results come from stepping outside of perfect, even light. Brittaney brought a sweet little astronaut lighting device. She wasn’t sure if we would be able to use it. We played and I love the results!
4. Celebrate Milestones (Big or Small)
Every chapter of your love story deserves to be celebrated. Whether it’s your engagement, anniversary, or a new season of life (like Chad and Brittaney’s growing family!), documenting these moments gives you a tangible way to look back and see how your story evolves over time.
Pro Tip: Don’t wait for a “big reason” to book a session. Sometimes the in-between moments—the quiet ones, the creative ones—end up being the most meaningful.
5. Stay Open to Spontaneity
Some of the best photos happen when things don’t go exactly as planned. The laughter, the surprises, and the unexpected moments often turn into your favorite memories. Chad and Brittaney’s pregnancy announcement was a perfect example—it added so much joy and emotion to an already meaningful session.
Pro Tip: Give yourself permission to be present, go with the flow, and let your photographer capture the magic as it unfolds.
Final Thoughts
Every couple has their own rhythm, their own story, and their own kind of magic. Incorporating what you love into your session turns your photos into more than images—it turns them into memories that feel like you.
If you’re planning a couple’s session in Los Angeles or beyond and want to create something deeply personal, let’s dream it up together.
