Pregnancy Photos for Every Body | Los Angeles Maternity Photographer

Let me be honest with you for a second.

If you've been sitting on the fence about booking maternity photos because you're worried about how you'll look. You're not doing yourself any favors. I say that with so much warmth. Because here's what I know, from being on both sides of the camera: the worry is real. The hesitation makes total sense. And the photos you almost didn't take? Those are usually the ones you end up treasuring most.

This one's for every pregnant person who has googled "maternity photographer Los Angeles" and then immediately talked themselves out of it.

Let's talk about it.

The part nobody really talks about

Maternity photography has an image problem. So much of what we see online was made for one specific body type, one specific aesthetic, one version of pregnancy. And when you don't see yourself in those images, it's easy to decide the whole thing isn't for you.

I get it. I didn't even do maternity photos myself. I felt too weird about it.

So when a client shows up nervous, skeptical, or already convinced she's going to hate every photo, I'm not brushing that off. I understand it.

One mama came to me with real concerns. She was larger bodied, she was pregnant, and she was worried about how she'd look in photos. That kind of thing takes courage to say out loud.

My job during the inquiry call and during the session wasn't just to take pretty pictures. It was to make sure she felt genuinely, actually beautiful the whole way through. We talked through outfits together. Her wife showed up with so much love and energy. And by the end of the session, she had photos she really, truly loves.

That's the job.

What "every body" actually means in practice

Saying "I photograph every body" is easy. Doing it takes work. It's ongoing, intentional work. Here's what that looks like for me:

  1. It starts with getting to know you. Before we pick a location or talk outfits, I want to know what your life actually feels like right now. I'm not building sessions that look good on my website. I'm building something that reflects you.

  2. Every session is tailored, not templated. We're not all going to the same spot, wearing the same outfit, hitting the same pose. That's on purpose.

  3. Posing is a real skill, and I take it seriously. Maternity sessions need a little more direction than my usual candid style, and small adjustments make a huge difference. A couple examples:

    • The knee knock. Standing straight on with both knees locked reads stiff in photos, every time. I'll have you soften one knee and shift your weight back. It instantly creates a curve in your silhouette and makes the belly the focal point instead of your posture.

    • Hand placement on the belly. Flat palms tend to look posed. I'll ask for fingertips instead, or one hand resting and one hand cradling underneath. It reads as a real gesture, the kind you'd actually do, not one you were told to do.

  4. These aren't things you need to know walking in. They're things I'm watching for and adjusting in real time.

  5. Every person in the frame matters. Both partners need to feel equally seen, equally present in the photos. That's true for every couple I shoot, and it doesn't happen by accident. I'm actively thinking about it.

  6. I start with prompts, not poses. Then I become your posing coach the moment the shot calls for it. Most of the session, I'm giving you something to do, not somewhere to stand: walk toward me, look at your partner, laugh at the thing you just said. That's where the real moments live. But when I see a shot that needs more structure, like a formal portrait, a specific angle, a moment where "just be natural" isn't going to get us there, I switch gears completely. I'll walk you through exactly where to put your chin, your hands, your weight, step by step, until it feels right. You're never left guessing which mode we're in. I'll tell you.

What self-conscious clients get wrong before they even book

I hear this across every genre I shoot, but it shows up hardest in maternity. People think they need to arrive perfect: perfect body, perfect bump, a perfect idea of what to do with their hands.

Here's what I wish every expecting parent knew before reaching out:

You don't have to figure this out on your own. There's a consultation call so you can ask questions. A questionnaire so I know what you're hoping for. A planning guide so you're not winging it on session day.

"I won't know what to do" isn't a problem. That's what I'm there for. Showing up is the only job you have.

You might surprise yourself. The compliment I hear most from nervous clients, over and over: "That was so much easier than I expected, and you made me feel so beautiful." Never gets old.

Newborn photos are not a substitute. I know it's tempting to think you'll just wait for the baby. But maternity photos capture something completely different. It's the bump, the anticipation, the two of you before everything changes. Once it's gone, it's gone.

And the self-consciousness usually melts fast. A few minutes in, once we're laughing about something dumb, the camera stops feeling like a threat.

Why this matters beyond the photos

Pregnancy is a lot. Your body is doing something enormous. You might feel beautiful one day and like a stranger to yourself the next.

Somewhere in the middle of all of that, you deserve photos that look like you, not a version of you that had to shrink, or hide, or perform.

The galleries that stick with me are the ones from clients who almost didn't book. Who talked themselves out of it a few times before finally reaching out. Who showed up nervous and left feeling like something shifted.

That's the part that keeps me doing this.
