Stepping into someone’s home to document the early days of being parents with a newly earth-side babe is one of my favorite things that I get to do as a lifestyle photographer. I love the intimacy that naturally happens between new parents and a fresh new soul.

I arrived at a beautiful home tucked in the hills of Hollywood, greeted with warm, easy smiles and comfy slippers for me to wear. There was a lot of light in the house both physically and energetically and we all fell into an easy exchange quickly. Khadija and Taymour were super at ease with just a hint of new parent jitters. We decided to start in the master bedroom. The light was beautiful and they knew they felt the most comfortable in the Mater bedroom so we started there.

*It’s important for your in home newborn session to know where you are the most at ease. There’s enough that can be uncomfortable in postpartum, the place where you take your photos definitely does not need to be one of them.

My approach to in-home lifestyle newborn sessions is really to let the babe lead. If they want to be held, they get held. If they are sleepy and comfortable we start with details first, that’s where we started this day.

We spent some quiet time enjoying the sweet ease of this little babe, talking about this beautiful new chapter in their lives and marveling at parenthood.

Something to think about when you are having lifestyle newborn photos taken is if you want some feeding images. At some point during the session most likely we will pause to feed at least once, if not a few times. My beautiful newborn photographer offered this and I didn’t do them, and when I think back I do wish I had taken the opportunity. She would surely have captured it more beautifully than I did during one of the middle of the night feedings after I couldn’t get the idea of having that image out of my mind. I invite you to take a moment to think about it before your shoot. You may change your mind either way, but at least you’ve mulled it over.

There are a couple other things to think about before you have your in-home newborn session.

When you are choosing your wardrobe simple is good and comfortable is great. Onsies are great for new babies. They are easy and don’t usually bunch up and create distracting elements in the photos. Leave hands and feet available as close up detail shots of fingers and toes are irresistible.

As with any photography session you want to steer away from big logos as they are distracting. The focus should be on you and the connection with your loved ones, not the brand of clothes you are wearing. Pay attention to the colors in your house as well. There’s no need to match, but it’s more pleasing to the eye and again less distracting in images if there is an element of coordination or consideration.
